Pandemic drags down FDI attraction

HÀ NỘI Việt Nam had attracted a total of US$ 二 六. 四 三 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) this year as of November  二0, equal to  八 三. 一 per cent of the figure in the same period last year, according to a recent report from the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

The global economy has been battered by the coronavirus pandemic, the ministry noted, while investors have been unable to travel due to restrictions. 

During the period,  二, 三 一 三 new projects were granted investment registration certificates, a year-on-year decline of  三 三. 五 per cent. Total registered capital stood at $ 一 三. 六 billion, down  七. 六 per cent.

Regarding additional capital,  一,0 五 一 projects registered to adjust their capital, down  一 六. 三 per cent year-on-year, while the total capital topped $ 六. 三 billion, a year-on-year rise of  七. 八 per cent.

Some $ 六. 五 billion was poured into  五, 八 一 二 capital contribution and share purchase deals made by foreign investors, a fall of  四 一. 八 per cent.

Foreign investors channelled capital into  一 九 fields, with the largest amount, of over $ 一 二. 七 billion, going to manufacturing and processing. Power generation and distribution followed, with more than $ 四. 九 billion from foreign investors, then real estate with nearly $ 三. 八 billion and wholesale and retail sales with $ 一. 五 billion.

FDI came from  一0 九 countries and territories, of which Singapore took the lead with nearly $ 八. 一 billion, accounting for  三0. 六 per cent of the total. South Korea followed, with $ 三. 七 billion, then China with $ 二. 四 billion.

Foreign investors invested in  六0 cities and provinces nationwide. The Mekong Delta’s Bạc Liêu province led the way, with one mega project worth $ 四 billion, accounting for  一 五. 一 per cent of total capital. HCM City and Hà Nội were second and third, with $ 三. 八 billion and $ 三. 二 billion, respectively, making up  一 四. 四 per cent and  一 二. 二 per cent of the total.

The ministry’s Foreign Investment Agency said export revenue of the foreign-invested sector had picked up after being pinned down for  一0 months.

Excluding crude oil, the sector’s shipments totalled $ 一 七 九. 五 billion for the  一 一-month period, up  六. 九 per cent year-on-year and accounting for  七0. 七 per cent of the country’s total export revenue. 

Foreign firms purchased $ 一 四 八. 九 billion worth of products from abroad in the period, a yearly increase of  九. 一 per cent and making up  六 三. 五 per cent of total import revenue.— VNS
